The McGrath family’s three famous hotels have been sold to newly formed South African company, Liz McGrath Collection (Pty.) Ltd.
The company has signed an agreement and acquired The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel in Cape Town, The Marine Hotel in Hermanus and The Plettenberg Hotel in Plettenberg Bay. The McGrath family will still retain a 20% interest in the company and transactions will be completed when the asset transfers have been registered with the land registry office.
Sherwood explains that he decided to name the company in memory of Liz McGrath as she created and devoted her years to the hotels. McGrath passed away in 2015 and her three children continued to maintain the hotels.

Owner of Liz McGrath Collection, Mr James B Sherwood says customers who have come to know the signature brands should know that there will be no changes in the management or how the hotels operate.
Sherwood and McGrath met during his visits in Cape Town where he owns the Mount Nelson in 1987 on behalf of Orient-Express Hotels. He is also the founder of Belmond Ltd.
Liz McGrath attained her first hotel, The Plettenberg, in 1987, she then bought The Cellars-Hohernot in 1992 then The Marine in 1998. Her expertise in garden and décor helped her turn the properties into lavish five-star hotels.
The Liz McGrath Collection will be directed by Mr. Sherwood, Nicholas Seewer, Mr. Alger, Ingrid Wheller and Michael McGrath.
All three hotels have been members of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux group.
