SA Insider Guide: Easter school holidays in Durban

The December holidays have long been forgotten, and shining like a light at the end of a tunnel is the Easter long weekend, coming up from 14 to 17 April this year.  

If you've been smart about taking your leave this year, you could be one of the lucky people to now have most of the first school holidays off, between 31 March to 17 April.

To save you some planning time, we've lined up the best events, gigs and things to do in and around Durban for the Easter school holidays, so you have more time on your hands to spend with family and friends at these lovely spots.  

Here is our guide to all that you can see, do, taste and explore:

Week 1 - 31 March to 9 April

SEE: Kevin Fraser at the Sneddon Theatre as he pushes society over the hedge in an all new, hilarious blend of modern world problems, delivered with multiple South African spices or Catch the Eagles at the Play House Company on the 8th of April.

DO: Stop fooling around and take on the Shongweni or Umlangha Park Run on 1 April.

TASTE: Try a Curry Master Class with Chef Kevin Joseph at the Oyster Box on 31 March.

EXPLORE: Go check out the Inner-Circle Flea market on 2 April, it’s family orientated with eating areas, live music in the amphitheatre and kids activity.

Week 2: 10 April to 16 April 

SEEVirginia Nature Reserve, a 38ha reserve in the heart of Durban North where you can see blue duikers, mongoose and some rare bird species.

DODurban Ice Arena is a fun-filled arena for recreational ice-skating offering Friday night discos or a memorable birthday party experience

TASTE: Make the Boiler Room on 9th Avenue at the Lion Match Office Park your morning coffee stop. They do delicious smoothies and Red Velvet Milkshakes for the children too.

EXPLORE:  Oribi Gorge is a sandstone canyon in southern KwaZulu-Natal, cut by the Mzimkulwana river where you’ll find iconic Leopard Rock one of the coolest places in South Africa to take a picture. 

DON'T MISS: 13 to 16 April Splashy Fen

This unique outdoor experience takes place over the Easter weekend and attracts thousands of diverse revellers to a farm just outside Underberg in KwaZulu-Natal's Southern Drakensberg region

Friday, 14 April

SEE: Kids under 99 at uShaka, one clever way to check off all there is to do at Ushaka Marine World.

DO: Groove to the beat of your own drum with the Drumshack Experience for drumming lessons.

TASTE:  Try out Afros Chicken for a real Durban taster sensation. 

EXPLORE: The Mooi River Festival will be happening all through the Easter Weekend.

Saturday, 15 April 

SEE: Durban Funworld - Did you know that during the school holidays, Funworld is open until late every day?!

DO: Gallop across a deserted beach at sunset on a horse ride in Zimbali Beach.

TASTE:  Support local produce at the Foodies Market in Ballito.

EXPLORE: Rock climb, mountain bike, canoe, hike or abseil at the Shongweni Dam and Game Reserve.

Sunday, 16 April

SEE: Handel's Messiah, a choral masterpiece and the world’s best loved oratorio, attracting audiences the world over - book tickets here

DO: Umhlanga Antiques & Collectables Fair in Durban is held monthly on the third Sunday of the Month. 

TASTE: Take a short day trip to the Prawn Shack and catch up with friends over some good food and drinks.

EXPLORE: Take the kids to enjoy some water activities in the sun at the Wave House

HAVE YOU SEEN: VIRAL: Durban like you've never seen it before

Monday, 17 April

SEE: Kids can enjoy a safe playground at the Golden Hours Family Market on Sundays.

DO: Umgeni River Bird Park - Tickets cost R50 per adult and R40 for children aged 4 to 12 years. Find them at Riverside Road.  

TASTE: Enjoy some seaside dining, delicious cocktails and live local music at the Blue Dolphin Bar in North Beach.

EXPLORE: Take the Kloof to Inchanga Train Ride and explore the Valley of 1000 Hills Route.
