Cape Town - The annual SANParks photo competition has officially announced 2016's winning image - a close-up portrait of the very shy galago, better known as a 'bush baby'.

The man behind the winner shot is Clyde Williams, who took the photograph of the little bush baby at crocodile bridge in the iconic Kruger National Park.

Other favourites in the top categories include a photo by Katharina Hilgers, showing an elephant cow reaching out for her calf in a mud pool. The photo was taken in Hapoor dam in Addo Elephant National Park, where the mother elephant struggled tirelessly to retrieve her calf from the mud. Eventually, rangers assisted in rescuing the calf.

We also love a winner photograph by Stephen Kangisser, capturing a tender moment between a lion cub and his mother at Satara Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park, at a buffalo kill.

Just look at these incredible shots taking in SA's National Parks:

The competition opened in April this year, and invited photographers in all South Africa's national parks to submit photographs in the following categories:

Portraits: All animals and insects - including reptiles and birds
Landscapes
Animals and insects: All animals and insects
Plants: flowers and trees
Black & white: all subjects
Birds
Human activity

Within these seven categories, two winners were announced: one for Digital Compact (Smartphone category) and Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras.

Williams' photo won in the Portraits category, in the DSLR division, before being crowned as the overall winner.

For shooting the winning photo, Williams receives a voucher for two adults to stay at any South African National Park for three mid-week nights in economy accommodation. The photo will also be published in the SANParks Times.

Last year, a retired businessman from Bellville in Cape Town, Abraham Mouton, took the winning shot for the SANParks photo competition. Mouton's photo too won in the portraits category before claiming the overall top spot.
