Cape Town - As the Western Cape dams labour into disaster mode following a dry, hot summer - South Africa's largest dam, The Gariep in the Free State, is on the brink of reaching full capacity.

According to information published on the Reenval in SA Facebook group, the Gariep was sitting at 98.1% in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 7 March, with an influx of 300m3/s.

The reception office at Gariep - A Forever Resort, which sits right on the banks of the iconic dam, confirmed to Traveller24 the water is expected to spill over the 88-metre-high wall quite soon, creating a majestic display of water power.

The iconic Gariep also celebrated its 45th birthday on 3 March, after officially opening in 1972.

The Vaal Dam, as well as the Grootdraai and Spitskop Dams were already overflowing last week, as the Department of Water and Sanitation had to open two sluice gates, optimistically estimating that the country could recover from the recent droughts within the next two to three years.

While the Gariep Dam in itself is an oasis for water-loving tourists in the Free State, the Orange River on which it sits is also luring tourists with its sheer power following the good rains.

Video footage shot on Friday, 3 March, show the Orange River gushing over the iconic Augrabies Falls in the national park. And according to Nadia Lemmetuis, Communication Manager for the Arid Parks, the river was expected to rise to a flow of about 500m3/s over the weekend.
