UPDATE: OR Tambo mops up after flash-flood delays

Cape Town - South Africa's busiest airport was severely affected by flash floods on Wednesday, with flights delayed and diverted as a result. 

News24 reports the severe weather storm activity claimed the life of one person and several others are still missing.  

Following the flash floods, which cut off access roads to the aiport and flooded parts of lower level airport building and parking, an estimated 26 aircraft diversions took place between 17:10 and 18:30.

Aircraft were diverted to King Shaka International, Lanseria, Wonderboom and Gaborone.

On Thursday morning at 05:30 Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) confirmed that all access roads affected by Wednesday's flooding were now open and that flight schedules were returning to normal. The South African Weather Service however forecasts more thunderstorms are epxected over Gauteng on Thursday.

Wednesday's flash floods caused mayhem on the roads in and around the airport, particularly on the N3 Buccleuch interchange which was flooded in both directions as well as along both directions of Linksfield Road. Gilooley's interchange was also seriously affected. The M1 was still flooded at the Athol Road on- and off-ramps in Melrose at 22:00 on Wednesday evening.

Passengers can contact 011 921 6262 for any updates or local traffic authorities for more information.

South African Airways confirmed it had divert some flights that were Johannesburg bound on Wednesday evening but expected all its domestic flights to operate as per normal, expecting one domestic flight to be affect on Thursday morning.

"As matters stand, only one domestic flight will be impacted this morning. It is a flight which will operate from Johannesburg to Durban and will be delayed by approximately one hour," says to Tlali Tlali, SAA spokesperson.

"We have recovered the schedule as much as possible and have ensured that flights arriving this morning, mostly international ones, carrying passengers with onward connections are not impacted."
