Weather Update: Disruptive snow underway in the Free State

Cape Town - The South African Weather Service says disruptive snowfalls can be expected over the Golden Gate National Park in the Free State, as well as the southern Drakensberg in the Eastern Cape on Monday, 13 June. 

Snow Report SA agrees, saying "Snow is expected late on Sunday evening, 12 June, in the Afriski Mountain Resort area... Heavier falls can also be possible in the Tiffindell area and around Rhodes in the Eastern Cape."

Snow fell over the weekend in the Eastern Cape already.

On Monday, gale force north-easterly winds can also be expected between Port St Johns and Richard's Bay on the East Coast. 

Heavy rain is expected over the mountainous areas of the Cape Metropole, Overberg and south-western parts of the Cape Winelands on Monday evening into Tuesday morning. Here, a 80% change of rain is forecast for Monday. Over the rest of the Western Cape's western side, a 60% chance of rain can be expected. 

In the Free State's eastern and central parts and over Lesotho, a 60% chance of rain can also be expected on Monday.  

Very cold to cold minimum temperatures can be expected over the interior of the country. It will be cool in the rest of SA, but warm along the south-east coast, Lowveld and Limpopo Valley. 

Maximum temperatures will be very cold over the north-eastern interior, otherwise cold to cool in the rest of the country. 

Monday's maximum temperatures will be cool. Johannesburg can expect a max of 11°C,  while Pretoria will reach a high of 14°C. Bloemfontein in the Free State will reach a max of only 11°C.

Along the coasts, Cape Town will reach a high of 17°C, Port Elizabeth will reach be 21°C and Durban will reach 22°C.
